Get ready for an exciting weekend in Wichita, where the future stars of college basketball and potential NBA players will showcase their talents!
The Hype Before the Hype: Wichita's Basketball Extravaganza
This Friday, Newman University will host the fourth annual Air Capital Hoopfest, an event that brings together four of the nation's top prep basketball programs. But here's where it gets controversial: these young athletes are about to make a splash before the NBA draft, endorsement deals, and national TV fame even enter the picture.
The event is a rare opportunity for Wichita fans to witness future Division I standouts and potential NBA players before their names become household across the country.
With a pedigree that includes NBA alumni like Joel Embiid, Cade Cunningham, and D'Angelo Russell, the participating teams - Sunrise, Dream City Christian, Montverde Academy, and Veritas Academy - are sure to deliver an unforgettable experience.
For Wichita fans, it's a chance to witness elite talent up close without having to travel far.
"It's a unique opportunity to bring this level of basketball to our community," says Sunrise coach Kyle Lindsted. "We have a passionate basketball culture here, and it's exciting to showcase these incredible athletes right in our backyard."
Sunrise has transformed its annual homestand into a must-see event since joining the prestigious Nike EYBL Scholastic League, widely recognized as the toughest league in high school basketball. This weekend's stop in Wichita offers a competitive edge and a chance to showcase the city's basketball prowess.
"Staying at home at this stage of the season is a welcome break," Lindsted adds. "The travel and schedule have been intense, so this is a refreshing change. We get to stay put and enjoy the support of our local fans."
The schedule is packed with high-level matchups. The Hoopfest kicks off on Friday with Sunrise vs. Veritas, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday featuring Veritas vs. Dream City and the highly anticipated showdown between Sunrise and Montverde. The event concludes on Sunday morning with Montverde taking on Veritas.
Tickets are available on Sunrise Christian's website, with prices starting at $15 for adults and $8 for kids, students, and seniors. Three-day passes are also an option.
Saturday night's game between Montverde and Sunrise is expected to be the highlight of the weekend. Montverde, synonymous with elite talent, will face off against Sunrise, who are eager to break their three-game losing streak in league play. Both teams have been ranked in ESPN's national top 25, adding to the excitement.
For Lindsted, who returned to Sunrise in 2023 after coaching at the Division I level, the event is about more than star ratings. It's about giving Wichita fans a glimpse of elite high school basketball at its finest.
"It's going to feel like a high-level college basketball game," Lindsted explains. "These are intense, competitive matches, not just showcase games. The players will be giving it their all, and the atmosphere will be electric."
And this is the part most people miss: it's not just about the future NBA stars. It's about the passion, the grit, and the love for the game that these young athletes bring to the court.
